Bow frog and handle features for description & condition checking
(Image map shows various bow features and not defects)
Pearl slides and eyes on bow frogs and bow hair are easily replaced and should not present any intrinsic reduction to value if not in order at point of sale
Never touch bow hair if possible
Always reduce the tension by using the adjuster to slacken the hair when the bow is not in use.
Points to look for are jointing seams in the stick or head filled with glue, metal or wooden pins (press link)
Check the straightness of the bow by slightly tightening the adjuster and looking down the stick as though it were a rifle sight. A very slight leftward curve is not necessarily considered a defect. Other results should be queried with the seller.
Bow strength is harder to assess and should be exercised by the more experienced.
Adjusters and frogs are often replaced and any mismatching or awkward fitting mounts should be queried with seller. Note also that older bows which have been undisturbed by restoration may have awkward fitting mounts due to the differing shrinkage rates of ebony and pernambuco.
